The Laundry sees Walton Lodge on Coldharbour Lane turning into an all day neighbourhood brasserie and bar.
Taking over an Iconic building in Brixton is local entrepreneur Melanie Brown who also runs the New Zealand Wine Cellar in Pop Brixton. Brown is aiming to turn the old laundry into a two floored all day restaurant and bar.
Nothing stands still in London, and the latest place to announce an opening in Brixton is The Laundry. The neighbourhood bistro and bar will take over the old Walton Lodge Laundry site on Coldharbour Lane.
Owner Melanie Brown has bags of experience in the business as well as being already involved in the area. Brown – who you may know from her wine bar, The New Zealand Wine Cellar in nearby Pop Brixton – worked as a chef for Peter Gordon at The Providores for years as well as Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen and Vinoteca.
As for the bulding itself, as the name suggests it was a working laundry for almost 120 years – not only doing domestic laundry but also working for clients like the Orient Express and Grosvenor House, before finally shutting up shop in 2014. The restaurant will range over two floors – upstairs there’ll be bar and counter dining as well as lots of banquettes – and downstairs there’ll be two private dining rooms. Should the weather be clement, there’ll also be a sizeable terrace with plenty of spots for alfresco dining.
The all day space will open at 8am for breakfast through to dinner and will also serve up weekend brunches. They’ve applied for a late licence, so they’re hoping to be able to serve interesting wines and cocktails to Brixton folk into the night.
